Salt-tolerant forage controls kochia

CDC Salt King, developed at the University of Saskatchewan, could be available commercially in a couple of years and help producers control weeds particularly in saline areas

REDVERS, Sask. — A new hybrid wheatgrass designed for saline areas is helping to control kochia.

CDC Salt King, developed by forage breeding research chair Bill Biligetu at the University of Saskatchewan, is out-competing kochia at several sites at the South East Research Farm near Redvers, Sask.

There, SERF and the Saskatchewan Forage Seed Development Commission are working together on a two-year fertility project for Salt King seed production. It’s funded through the Saskatchewan agriculture ministry’s ADOPT program.
